About the project
From September 2014 ESN Italia has launched a new project concerning Erasmus students' voting rights.
The project was created in response to the current legal situation: indeed voting abroad for the political elections is not possible for those Italian citizens who have joined an international mobility programme and who are therefore temporarily living in a foreign country. Such situation excludes and discriminates against Italian Erasmus students in comparison with those Italian citizens who reside abroad and are given the possibility to vote in the diplomatic premises present in the territory. Through this initiative, which enjoys full support from the local authorities and universities, ESN Italia intends to collect 50,000 signatures which are necessary to put forward a legislative proposal of citizens' initiative. The content of this proposal aims therefore to enable Italian students who are joining an international mobility programme/Erasmus+ internship to exercise the right to vote without necessarily coming back to their country of residence. In order to coordinate the collection of signature, a territorial manager has been appointed in each region next to many other local managers who have been appointed in each municipality. All Italian citizens can sign such proposal in the municipality in which they are registered.
The collection of signatures will finish in February 2015 with the delivery of the lists to the Court of Cassation. The board of ESN Italia and all its sections are making a great effort for the success of such project: indeed we believe it is unacceptable that Italian citizens are being discriminated and denied the possibility of exercising one of the most fundamental rights just by participating to a community project which, at the same time, is supported by the Italian government; a project that one could consider as one of the most important ones within the European Union as it contributes to the training of the future European generation. The right to vote has been the greatest political breakthrough and it is through the exercise of such right that we identify ourselves not only as Italian inhabitants, but also as Italian citizens.
ESN Italia will work hard on this project in order to avoid that the status of outgoing student and of European citizen prevents the exercise of guaranteed rights as an Italian citizen.
